This ancient celebration dates back to Roman times when a local Shayman, gained much fame for his healing prowess. He usually wore a robe made of thin material or “crispa”. Some of the medicines that he dispensed was quite unpalatable so he mixed them in with a flour and egg batter and made thin waffles which he topped with savoury or sweet fillings. These waffles eventually became known as crispas and when they were introduced to Gaul were called crepes. After the battle of Agincourt in 1415, which took place on St. Crispin’s Day, the English Army munched on crepes and brought the delicacy back to Old Blighty where it has remained a favourite ever since.
To celebrate Pancake Day, The Garden Restaurant will be serving:

Savoury beef pancakes with chimichurri sauce
Pulled roast chicken and mushroom pancakes with jalapenos, salsa and melted cheese
