Jacobs staff make PPE for National Health Service heroes

In the fight against Covid19, a team from our occupier Jacobs has set up a manufacturing operation to supply personal protective equipment for front line workers in the UK’s National Health Service.

Operations Manager Jennifer Grace and Paul Reeder, Principal Mechanical Engineer, both part of the Jacobs Engineering Development Team based at Birchwood Park, saw the call from James Coxon, a palliative medicine doctor, who mobilised thousands of 3D printer owners to make components for face shields.

After hearing that manufacturing hubs were needed around the country, they managed to convert the Birchwood Park technical laboratory into a production facility, with all working areas clearly marked for physical distancing and a full COVID-19 risk assessment.

Also helping with the PPE production are assembly workers Andrew McKenna, John Gregory, Kirsty Hearn, Paul Bains and Steve Bate, who have been wearing additional protective equipment to prevent cross contamination.
As the virus can survive for up to three days on packaging and materials, all items are quarantined before being dispatched.

Jennifer said: “We’d like to thank the company and our HSSEA and facilities staff for enabling us to do our bit for NHS workers on the front line.”

3DCrowd UK are also looking for volunteers to help with collections and deliveries around the North West. If you are interested, please contact paul.reeder@jacobs.com
