Fuelling the future of women and girls in science

Birchwood Park occupier NNL is celebrating the inspiring women across their company for Women in Science Day.

The NNL-led, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)-funded Advanced Fuel Cycle Programme (AFCP) interviewed several women – including those from NNL – who are Fuelling Net Zero.

According to UNESCO data, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women and only around 30% of all women students in higher education pursue STEM-related fields. In the nuclear sector, women made up only 22% of the workforce in 2020.

Hear about their career paths, advice for aspiring scientists and clean energy ambitions to discover how we’re working to support the future of nuclear. Read the full interview here: https://afcp.nnl.co.uk/2021/02/11/fuelling-the-future-of-women-and-girls-in-science/

We at Birchwood Park are proud to be home to many nuclear, science, technology and engineering companies, and celebrate all the skills and contributions to this industry that help drive science and technology to enable a more sustainable, equitable future for all.

Here are some inspiring words from some of our very own Birchwood Park NNL Women In Science:

Sophie Zienkiewicz (Insight Advisor): Empowering our women and girls at all levels, ages, abilities and backgrounds is essential and every women in STEM is a success. Society is working hard to bring women into a more inclusive conversations and STEM should be proud of what it’s achieved and inspired by the journey ahead.

Naomi Rutledge (Technical Graduate in Thermal and Structural Modelling): As a mechanical engineer working for NNL, I always feel supported in my work, and I want all my colleagues to feel the same.

Leah Etheridge (Radiological & Chemotoxic Safety Assessor): I decided early on in my chemical engineering degree that I wanted a career that would benefit society. Nuclear fulfils this ambition by allowing me to work on a variety of exciting projects that benefits society, both now and for generations to come.
