Chaplain’s Corner: Top Tips for Wellbeing

Following on from Wellbeing Week it seemed like a good time to reflect on some top tips for taking care of ourselves.

Connecting positively with others is one of the most fundamental things that we can do to help keep our sense of equilibrium. Sharing experiences, emotions and reactions to our situation can really help us to contextualise our current state and to maintain a more stable sense of who we are. So many of use social media and technology to stay connected especially at the moment that it can be easy to overlook the fact that we all benefit from some time away from it. Most wellbeing coaches these days suggest taking at least an hour away from social media and technology before bed in order to help our brains to relax and get ready for sleep.

Creating a routine for ourselves can be beneficial in helping us to stay motivated and keep in a more positive mindset. Having a fairly set time for going to bed at night and getting up in the morning can help to create structure and ensure that we get enough rest. Getting dressed can also help with mood and maintaining a sense of purpose as does taking some form of exercise, however light. Regular movement can really help our mood and gentle exercise can release endorphins that help distract from discomfort whether mental or physical.

Planning in some time to spend on a favourite activity is also beneficial whether that is listening to music, sewing, woodworking, card making, reading etc. Doing something we enjoy gives us a focus and an uplift that can make a huge difference to our mood and our outlook on life. It’s also something that we find it all too easy to overlook or let go of when we are feeling overwhelmed. It’s not selfish to make sure that you take some time for you. If we don’t take care of ourselves, we have nothing left to enable us to take care of the people we care about.

I hope that you have found ways to help you stay positive in this situation.
