Chaplain’s Corner

It’s been so lovely to be able to get outside a little more over the past couple of weeks with the change of the weather hasn’t it? The sun has such a healing power.

I’ve noticed how much more cheerful and optimistic it makes me, and the people that I speak to, feel.

Being outside more naturally leads me to thinking a lot about nature and the positive impact that it has on my mood to spend some time appreciating it. The colours of nature really create an emotional response within me, a connection that defies explanation.

Looking at the striations in the rocks and trees in this particular image, very much led me to meditate a bit on how they’ve been formed by the impact of their experience of the weather and climate changes over the years; which then led on to thinking about how our experiences form us; how our characters are shaped and altered by our experiences and that led to wondering about how our experience of Covid is shaping us.

I’ve heard some people speak of how it has increased their anxiety and shaped their experience of going out, turning them into hermits wherever possible whilst others speak of feeling disconnected and as if they are alone in a desert even in spite of their faith and belief that God is with us always.

So I got to wondering – what do you see in this image? Emptiness and loneliness or rich colours, peace and strength?

For me it shows the tenacity and strength in this landscape and the beauty of the colours in the sky, the immensity of the view feels peaceful and somehow timeless, able to withstand whatever the elements throw at it in the years to come. Perhaps it depends on whether you are a glass half full or a glass half empty personality as to what you see here and as to how you are experiencing the current constantly shifting situation?

If you’d like to talk through your experience please look out for chaplains in the outside areas of the park around the Engine Rooms, duck pond and The Wood Shed areas on Mondays & Wednesdays weather permitting.
