“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”
Bill Vaughan

This quote always makes me smile and this year I couldn’t make up my mind which part suited me most. Ordinarily I tend towards optimism so would definitely be excited to see what the new year would be bringing. However, I must say that I was keen to see the end of 2020 for some months! Which way were you leaning as you rang in the New Year?

Hopefully you too are now seeing the light at the end of the Covid tunnel and feeling as though there are plans to be made, perhaps in the spring or summer time which doesn’t feel so far away now does it?

Is life feeling as if it’s getting back on track or at least taking a new, more positive direction as we find ourselves at the beginning of 2021? Are you feeling upbeat and ready to take on new challenges or are there things that you still feel a little conflicted about?

Perhaps your mood changes from one moment to the next with all that we’ve had to contend with over the past year. I know there are times when I experience that, when it happens I hold on to the awareness that without the lows I wouldn’t be able to recognise and enjoy the highs but that doesn’t stop me from sometimes wishing for more middle of the road days.

Sometimes at the moment it’s difficult to work out what ‘normal’ feels like as we seem to lurch from one situation to the next perhaps not ever really feeling in control of them; but here we are, able to spend a little time together acknowledging that fact and considering how we’re feeling about it. That, at least, is a good thing because self-awareness is the key to taking care of our mental health and wellbeing.

We have a range of resources on our web-site that can help with that including some that are more specific to the Covid-19 outbreak and some that help in dealing with everyday stress: https://mite.org.uk
